Does “Healthy Halloween Candy” Exist?
Halloween is almost upon us and for many that means an excuse to binge on fun-size Snickers and candy corn. But we all know the havoc that sugar and sticky treats can wreak on your mouth (cavities, anyone?) If you can’t completely avoid sticking your hand in the Halloween candy jar, you might be on the hunt for “healthy Halloween candy.” But is there such a thing as healthy Halloween candy? Sorry to burst your bubble, but no. But you can certainly make healthier choices when you’re choosing your treats.
Dark chocolate might be the least popular treat in the Halloween candy bag, but it’s also one of the healthiest. Studies show that dark chocolate is a powerful source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are critical for oral health, helping to reduce plaque, prevent gum disease, aid in wound healing and promote collagen synthesis. It’s also a delicious, and relatively lower calorie treat. So if you want to trick your mouth into eating something on the healthier side of Halloween, dark chocolate is our number one.
Licorice is better than a low-fat treat — because it’s actually got no fat. Whether you fall on the Red Vine or Twizzler side of the licorice argument, licorice is deemed a healthier Halloween option for its relatively low sugar and calorie count. Just make sure to brush and/or rinse with water after, because any licorice bits that get stuck in between your teeth can convert into bacteria, which creates cavities.
Thanks to those peanuts, which boast high protein, fiber and even some calcium, Peanut M&Ms is one of the healthier choices you can make during Halloween. And with just 93 calories, 4.7 grams of fat, and 9.1 grams of sugar for a snack size, Peanut M&Ms come in on the lower sugar side of Halloween treats.
We know Halloween is all about fun costumes, parties and (some would say), most importantly, treats. And while it may be next to impossible to avoid the everpresent Halloween candy bowl, from your co-worker’s desk to your doctor’s office, you can at least make a healthier choice this year!
